"Regulation, Oversight, Ethics, and Government," with Dan Feldman and Gerald Benjamin
My guest is Dan Feldman, former NY State Assemblyman and our discussion is about the need for regulation and government oversight. Our special guest will be Professor Gerald Benjamin who will join us later in the show.
Dan Feldman teaches Oversight & Investigation, Ethics & Accountability, and Policy Analysis at the John Jay College, Graduate School of Management, He was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1980, and served as a member of the Legislature from 1981 through 1998, writing over 140 state laws, including New York's Megan's Law and Organized Crime Control Act. As Correction Committee chair for twelve years, he led some of the first efforts to repeal the Rockefeller drug laws. For six years thereafter, as a senior member of Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's staff, he exposed HUD's 203k mortgage loan guarantee scandal and led the investigation of UnumProvident's disability insurance scam. Until his full-time appointment at John Jay, he worked as Special Counsel for Law & Policy to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. In September 2010 SUNY Press published his most recent book, with co-author Gerald Benjamin, Tales from the Sausage Factory: Making Laws in New York State. He wrote or co-authored three other books and numerous scholarly articles, and served on the editorial board of Public Administration Review for eight years. His current research involves government oversight, constitutional law, and legal philosophy. He is a graduate of Columbia College (1970) BA in economics and the Harvard Law School (1973).

Co-author of Tales from the Sausage Factory: Making Laws in New York State, Gerald Benjamin. Gerald Benjamin, Director of the Center for Research Regional Education and Outreach (CRREO) at SUNY New Paltz and Associate Vice President for Regional Engagement, was appointed to the rank of Distinguished Professor of Political Science by the State University Board of Trustees in April, 2002.
Professor Benjamin is a graduate of Saint Lawrence University. His Masters (1967) and Doctoral (1970, with distinction) degrees in Political Science are from Columbia University. He joined the faculty at SUNY New Paltz as Assistant Professor of Political Science in 1968, and became Full Professor in 1981. From 1981-84 Benjamin served as Presiding Officer of the Faculty at New Paltz; between 1996 and 2008 he was Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The College, the largest academic unit of this comprehensive SUNY institution, was at the time organized in eighteen academic departments and interdisciplinary programs, offering bachelors’ degrees in more than 100 areas and masters’ degrees in a number of disciplines.
