"Can Public Education Programs be Saved for the Disadvantaged," with Dr. Rita Freedman, Mary Figueroa, Dr. Megan Flynn, and David Carlin

My guests are Dr. Rita Freedman, Mary Figueroa, Dr. Megan Flynn and David Carlin and our discussion is about Amazing Afternoons," and the future of critical afternoon programs for the the disadvantaged.

Dr. Rita Freedman is a clinical psychologist and noted expert on topics related to physical appearance. Her books   "Body Love" and "Beauty Bound" have been featured in Oprah Magazine, Vogue, People, Self, and Mademoiselle.  In "Overcoming Lsss," she offers a healing guide for moving beyond the pain of grief. A popular speaker at public and professional meetings, Dr. Freedman has appeared on The Today Show, Larry King, Oprah, Good Morning America, 20/20, and CNN.    

After graduating from Cornell University, she earned a Doctorate in Psychology from SUNY Albany, and completed an internship at the Center for Behavioral Psychotherapy. Dr. Freedman was honored as a Fellow by the American Psychological Association for her notable work and named distinguished psychologist of the year by the Westchester County Psychological Association. Currently, she maintains a clinical practice in Harrison, NY.

Mary Figueroa has served as director of the “Amazing Afternoons” after-school program at the Edward Williams School  for the  past ten years. A graduate of the College of Notre Dame, she decided to leave corporate  work  in order to give back to her community.  Born and raised in Mt. Vernon, she has a deep understanding of its history  and  brings  enthusiasm, compassion and respect for the potential strengths of her students.   
 
Megan Flynn, Ph.D. is the Assistant Executive Director for the Division of Children and Youth Services of Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS). In her position, she is responsible for the agency’s educational, mental health and supportive programs that help children and families deal with school, personal and social issues.

Dr. Flynn has spearheaded many initiatives serving children, youth and families, among them school-based mental health programs, domestic violence prevention programs for middle and high school youth, and mental health services for pre-schoolers, their parents and teachers.  She also has provided strong leadership to the agency in developing evidenced-based treatment and cutting edge training for staff.
 
A graduate of Douglas College, Dr. Flynn earned a Master’s in Psychology from The New School and a PhD in Psychology from Penn State University.

David Carlin is a junior at Williams College and volunteers at the “Amazing Afternoons” program at the Ed Williams School.
