"The Media, Madison Avenue, and the GOP Field" with Anne Cook

My guest is Anne Cooke, independent voter, blogger, political commentator and author of "Democrats in the Red Zone."

A.F., or Anne, Cook blogs at “Red Zone Blogitics” and is the host and producer of the Independent political and sports talk show “Red Zone Politics,” currently in development. She is author of “Democrats in the Red Zone: and Independent voter’s take on the game of political perception,” published in 2007.

The book addresses what Cook sees as ongoing deficiencies in the Democrats’ strategic game plan, especially when it comes to appealing to “guy” voters (and the gals who love ‘em). Her prescription? In short, Dems need to watch more football if they want to win more elections. Cook believes Barack Obama applied this principle well in 2008: but she questions whether the larger Democratic Party and its constituencies are clear on that concept.

Cook moved to Virginia from Maryland in 2005, to “help make a red state more purple.” She was part of a large influx of approximately half a million new voters into Virginia that tipped that state to Obama by 3 percentage points in 2008. After the election, Cook took a hiatus from covering politics and sports to do what many of her fellow Americans have sought to do: “Get a real job.” She is back on the blogosphere, gearing up for 2012 as she challenges voters to look at how the perception game is played and consider how words and images are used to manipulate their voting choices. She also looks forward to a post-lockout NFL season, including the hope that her New England Patriots won’t turn into a zombie team in the playoffs — if they make it that far.

Cook’s ultimate goal on the political front is to get more voters to think like REAL Independents; and to cut through the biased agendas of the established pundit class. Who is ultimately responsible for the politics and policies of our American nation? That burden lies with the voters, Cook says. Every voting season generates consequences in terms of policy far into the future, from new or altered laws to partisan “interpretations” of the Constitution on the Supreme Court. To fulfill the vision of our Founding Fathers for an enlightened citizenry, Cook says, more Americans need to take responsibility for basing their votes not on propaganda and paranoia from the right or the left, but on accepting facts in a reality-based universe. Our present and future depends on it.
