The American Cancer Society's Breast Cancer Awareness- Two Survivors talk about "giving back."

My guests this week are Patty Ferris and Carol Schwartz, cancer survivors and American Cancer Society volunteers.

Our topic today will be the American Cancer Society’s campaign against Breast Cancer, its annual march at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY on October 18th, and what has been the progress against this dread disease. Are we gaining on a cure?

Patty Ferris is a Westchester County native.  She and her 10 year old pug, currently call White Plains their home.  She works NYC in sales for Boston Coach, which is a full ground transportation company.  After surviving breast cancer 5 years ago, and wanting to give back to the wonderful people who helped her, she became in involved with American Cancer Society.  Starting out as just someone who wanted to walk for Making Strides and then becoming A Reach to Recovery Specialist

Carol Schwartz is he mother of 2 & a breast cancer survivor, soon to be 5 years in October. She was diagnosed in Oct. 2004, during Breast Cancer Awareness month when everywhere she turned a pink ribbon reminded her of her diagnosis. Her doctor connected to Carol with the ACS & she was trained to become a patient navigator. She has been navigating in various Westchester hospitals & doctor's practices since the program's inception. Navigating has been an extremely rewarding experience. She is also fundraising for Making Strides in October & has recruited many team members for her team "Carol's Clique" To date she has raised over $5,000.00 this year so far & hopes equal last year’s $16,000. She hopes to continue to make the cancer experience for others a little less "scary" by connecting them to the many resources the ACS has to offer
